Daily Trojan: Fires threaten Los Angeles communities
August 31, 2009
"The wildfires razing northeast Los Angeles — faintly visible from campus rooftops and balconies — continue to spread, forcing mandatory evacuations and threatening the homes and families of some USC students.

Firefighters battling three-digit temperatures, 80-foot flames and more than 35,000 acres of fire had only contained 5 percent of the blaze by 4 p.m. Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department."

Daily Trojan: Bus Riders survey finds MTA flops
September 4, 2009
"A recent survey by a local civil rights organization appears to confirm widespread notions about the lackluster quality of the city’s public transport system.

The survey, conducted by the Bus Riders Union, Los Angeles, gave the Metropolitan Transportation Authority a “D,” criticizing the MTA for high prices and slipshod efficiency."

Daily Trojan: Classical radio station experiments with new media
September 16, 2009
"Rarely do Tchaikovsky and Twitter go together.
But KUSC 91.5 FM — USC’s classical radio station and the country’s most listened to public radio station — is hoping to change that by working with the Integrated Media Systems Center to combine classical music with new media.
KUSC and IMSC, a research facility focused on new media based in the Viterbi School of Engineering, will be letting students shape the future of music with a venture called the Music X Project."

On Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m., people across California — including USC — will participate in the simulation aimed at improving the general public response to a potential natural disaster."

The Horse Boy; Family Finds Healing in an Unexpected Way

Daily Trojan: Family finds healing in an unexpected way
October 12, 2009
"When a child has a condition and modern medicine offers no relief, some parents turn to faith. Others turn to natural healing. When the Isaacsons discovered their autistic son had a connection with horses, they did both.

The documentary The Horse Boy follows the Isaacsons through Mongolia to visit shaman healers. Although the film has directional flaws, the story is a moving, miraculous look at nature and spirituality."

White On Rice; Indie Film Fails to Find Comedic Identity

September 15, 2009
"Got you! Though White on Rice’s deceptive title suggests a stereotype-ridden culture comedy, this indie flick is an equal opportunity workplace of family, romance and slice-of-life humor. But too many angles leave no room for solid development, and despite strong acting and clever staging, White on Rice’s mishmash of comedy and an annoying lead make incompetence appear front and center.
Jimmy (Hiroshi Watanabe) fails at life. Fresh from Japan, the odd-jobs man recovers from a divorce, mooches off his sister’s family and shares a room with his 10-year-old nephew. His sister defends him because he keeps things entertaining, but Jimmy is ready to find a wife — and his brother-in-law’s fetching niece seems like the perfect solution."

Paranormal Activity; Suspense Film Leaves Viewers Unsatisfied

Daily Trojan: Suspense film leaves viewers unsatisfied
October 22, 2009

"Word on the street is that after seeing Paranormal Activity, Steven Spielberg returned to the studio with the DVD in a trash bag. He claimed the door to his bedroom locked by itself after he watched the film. Was it the ghost of Orson Welles, still upset over Spielberg’s adaptation of War of the Worlds?

Truthfully, I would be more scared of Welles’ glowering specter than Paranormal Activity.

One of the latest horror film to hit theaters, Paranormal Activity centers around a young couple, Katie and Micah (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat), who are struggling with relationship problems. Not with each other, but with the ghost that seems to have followed Katie since childhood. Tech-happy Micah sees it as the perfect excuse to invest in a high-end video camera and record their bedroom at night."
